“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you will be my witnesses ” (Acts 1:8)
Our Confirmation is a continuation of what has begun at Baptism. It celebrates a developing awareness of the presence and action of God's love, the Holy Spirit, in our lives. When we celebrate Confirmation we remember that we are being transformed and that transformation will continue to take place until we are completely one in God. Confirmation is our Yes to be a vital part of the love-filled community that is the Body of Christ. We agree to let God's love work through our lives and allow the gifts of the Spirit to flourish within us. The gifts of the Spirit traditionally associated with Confirmation are wisdom, understanding, counsel, inner strength, knowledge, holiness and fear of the Lord.
On 20th July 2007, Pope Benedict XVI said, 'Confirmation gives us special strength to witness to and glorify God with our whole lives (cf. Rom 12:1). It makes us intimately aware of our belonging to the Church, the “Body of Christ”, of which we are all living members, in solidarity with one another (cf. 1 Cor 12:12-25). By allowing themselves to be guided by the Spirit, each baptized person can bring his or her own contribution to the building up of the Church because of the charisms given by the Spirit, for “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7). When the Spirit acts, he brings his fruits to the soul, namely “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal 5:22).'
Confirmation is celebrated by young people as they come to the threshold of adult life which is around the age of 13-14 years.
